Trying to cut back on calories with that diet soda? A recent study shows that drinking diet soda could have the opposite effect. A university of Illinois professor analyzed the eating and drinking habits of more than 22,000 American adults and what he found was pretty striking. In this case, diet soda tends to munch on foods that are packed with sugar, sodium, fat and cholesterol as a way of compensating for their low-calorie artificially sweetened bubbly beverage.
The assistant professor of kinesiology and community health at the University of Illinois looked at the number of calories eaten by the study participant as well as their consumption 0f discretionary foods. Meaning those energy dense nutrient poor items that do not fit into any place of the major food groups such as cookies and flies. A percentage higher than 90 of study subjects snacked on something on the list each day and took a beverage of 482 calories from these discretionary foods.
Nearly everybody who participated drank at least one discretionary beverage such as coffee, tea,alcohol and diet beverage everyday. The once who opted for lower calorie diet beverages were more likely to consume a greater percentage of their daily intake of discretionary food. Dr chalks says that it may be possible that people who consume diet beverages feel justified in eating more so that they can reach for a muffin or bags of chips, or perhaps they are compelled to eat more of these high calorie foods to feel satisfied.
According to Jackie newgent a chef, nutritionist, and author of all natural diabetes cookbook, there is never just one simple reasons why something like this occurs. She continues to say that many people tend to be calorie conscientious of overall nutritional quality. Newgent suggestion is sticking to low or no calories drinks that are 100% real. Her favorite includes unsweetened iced jasmine, green tea with lemon, fruity or floral tea without added sugar among others.
Ultimately it comes down to something many people are sick of hearing. Water is your true best beverage ever.
