SHAWN MENDES DRAG ME DOWN COVER
These days, Shawn Mendes may be singing duets with Hailee Steinfeld, and opening for Taylor Swift in front of crowded stadiums on her 1989 tour, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots as an super popular Vine cover singer. Yesterday he debuted his newest cover, a slow acoustic version of One Direction’s newest single, “Drag Me Down,” and #ShawnsNewSingle immediately trended nationwide on Twitter. (Where he has 3.77 million followers. Not bad at all for a 17-year-old kid from Canada.)
Is it better than the 1D original? Listen and judge for yourself.Despite his notoriety as a cover artist, Shawn’s development from Internet famous to famous-famous is mostly thanks to his original songs.
His debut album, Handwritten, was released in February 2015 to acclaim, and late last month he snagged Hailee Steinfeld to duet with him on the album’s single.
After the concert wit Taylor he wrote on his Instagram:
“Stitches.”Coolest birthday ever. Taylor brought me up on stage and had a crowd of 60 thousand people sing happy birthday to me. So lucky to be on tour with someone so incredibly kind. You rock Taylor. Thank you so much! ❤️
And he’s nominated for a Teen Choice Award (airing August 16) in the Choice Male Artist category — up against seasoned heartthrobs like Ed Sheeran and Nick Jonas.
