I’m Addicted to women’s shoes designer Jimmy Choo! We, girls, know very well the importance of shoes in our lives! Yes, we are aware it’s not the most important thing in life, but hey, it certainly brings a smile on our faces every time, doesn’t it?
That precious moments when you have them in your hands after long days watching them through the window glass of a shoe store, preparing to wear them for the first time… Yes, those are the moments only girls can understand!
Nothing can describe better the undying love for shoes as the hit series “Sex and the City” and the famous character of Carrie Bradshaw. We all enjoyed the adventures of four best friends and we all saw ourselves in at least one character. Remember when Carrie said: “I’ve spent $40,000 on shoes and I have no place to live?” Those women know how to dress! The episodes were not only about love and friendship but also about fashion and women’s desire for beautiful shoes.
Carrie was the icon of style! And she knew the best shoes out there, for sure! “With no man in sight, I decided to rescue my ankles from a life of boredom. By purchasing too many pairs of Jimmy Choo shoes!”
There is no passionate shoe lover out there who doesn’t know who is Jimmy Choo! Because, he is the women’s shoes designer God!
Jimmy Choo was born in Malaysia and his father was a shoemaker. He made his first shoes when he was eleven! Choo attended Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney which is now part of the London College of fashion where he graduated in 1983. While in college, he supported himself by working a part-time job at restaurants and as a cleaner at a shoe factory.
But, the time of success of this prestigious women’s shoes designer was yet to come! He opened the shop in Hackney in 1986. His designs were soon noticed and he had a place in Vogue in eight pages in 1988 issue! Later on, in the 1990’s he was named as an official shoemaker to Princess Diana. The very label of this famous women’s shoes designer was founded in London in 1996, by Jimmy Choo and Tamara Mellon, who discovered him eight years ago. She was a former Vogue’s magazine accessories editor and became the first creative director of the Jimmy Choo label. Later that year, they opened the store on Motcomb street in London, where the Jimmy Choo’s niece, Sandra Choi was appointed as a co-creative director of the brand.
This talented women’s shoes designer artist developed his unique style gradually: he started with snakeskin and crocodile skin, as well as satin and skyscraper heels with leather ankle straps which will later become his signature shoe model. Jimmy Choo has carefully built his image of urban glamour and femininity with his patent leather mules, heels with unique zebra-print and shoes decorated with jewels and feathers.
And the time came to conquer America, the prestigious market – a dream for every women’s shoes designer! Jimmy Choo opened the store on fifth Avenue in 1998, but the real success came with the launch of “Sex and the City” and the famous Carrie, the true, passionate, shoe icon.
In 2001, the brand was under acquisition by Equinox Luxury Group and Jimmy Choo turned to another fashion sector – handbags! The famous women’s shoes designer released the first line of handbags in 2002 and by 2004, he opened 23 stores in different cities – San Francisco, Paris, London, Milan, Boston and many more.
In 2009, Jimmy Choo collaborated with H&M and released his first men footwear line during the fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011-2012 in Milan. In the same year, Tamara Mellon launched “Icons”, a capsule collection that revived the most prestigious designs of this brand and she named each pair after famous actresses: Veronica, Brigitte, Marlene and Greta. She resigned the creative director’s position in 2011. Sandra Choi and Simon Holloway continued to be the creative directors of the famous brand.

There are some interesting facts about Jimmy Choo, that you maybe didn’t know.
